Burning

Compare:
Both men burned themselves.
They were both trying to get a message across to the government.
Neither were forced into doing it, and did it by choice.

Contrast:
The monk burned himself for religion, whereas Mohamed did it for justice among civilians.
The monk died while burning. Mohamed died after he was taken to the hospital.
The monk's burnign was pre-planned. Mohamed did it without thinking twice.

Free Thinking:
I think that burning yourself would defiantly get the attention of any government, it just doesn't seem right. Sacrificing your own life can't be acceptable to get the attention of someone. To be honest, I think that just protesting would be a better alternate. But one problem is that people would probably die during protests, whereas only one person would die by burning themselves. I admire Muhamed and the monk, no matter how crazy they are, to have the guts to burn themselves just to help others. It doesn't seem like anyone on Earth would be able to do that, yet, they have.

Quote/Poem:
UNJUST

Open highway and heart’s restrained,
Sun burn sustained,
Obscured thoughts sink,
Quarrel rethink.

Hands shake absent control unnerves,
Mere eye observes,
Free fall unfree,
Hurt aches deeply.

Speak words of love lie if you must,
Instincts unjust,
As passion burns,
All sense adjourns.

OPTION 2/Literary Analysis of WWI.

a. Present topic
b. Provide excerpt from information
c. Show how the topic factually relates to the information.

 1. How the assasination of Franz Ferdinand partly caused WW1. Franz Ferdinand on the 28th of June, 1914 by a 19 year-old Serbian. More information can be found here.
   2. On June 28, 1914, the Archduke Francis Ferdinand, who would have been the next king of Austria-Hungary, was shot and killed (along with his wife Sophie) in Sarajevo, a city in Bosnia. The assassin had been a Serbian nationalist. Hungary asked Germany for help and Serbia looked to Russia. Austria-Hungary then declared war on Serbia. More Information can be found here.
   3. Exactly 1 month after the assasination (June 28, 1914) Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia (The assassin had been a Serbian nationalist.) Previously, Russia had made allies with Serbia, and Germany had become allies with Austria-Hungary. Four days after war was declared, Germany officially began war with Russia. This marked the beginning of WW1.

White Man's Burden, Richard Kipling

1. Determine what Kipling means by "the White Man's Burden."
When Kipling explains the White Man's Burden, I think he means that white man will have to suffer a burden of what they've done to the African Americans for eternity. White man will never have forgiveness for the slaves treatment.
2. Does Kipling justify imperialism? How so?
I think that Kipling has a low view on imperialism, considering that he uses gross, horrible terms to describe it. Towards the end, he gives an ironic happiness effect on imperialism.
3. Why might such a justification might be so appealing?
The justification of imperialism would be appealing among a king, or one who wants to make themselves a legacy of a ruler.

Self Reflection: Reconstruction Debate.

How did I feel during planning this presentation? Why did I feel this way?
A. In the beginning, I thought that I wouldn’t be enough help to my group members because I didn’t completely grasp the 10 percent plan, or understand the content.

How did I feel prior to presenting? Why did I feel this way?
A. After studying and practicing for hours, I began to feel as if I would play one of the biggest parts in helping my group because I felt that I would know all my parts and take over the audience.

How did I feel while I was presenting? Why did I feel this way?
A. While I was presenting, I felt as though I had just ruined the entire debate for my group and my class mates because I had messed up so bad.

What did I personally do well?
A. I think that the timing of my slides with what I was saying turned out fascinating.

What did not go as desired in this presentation?
A. Once it came my turn to speak, I cracked under pressure and forgot everything that I had memorized.

On a scale from 1-10, how well do I think I understood the content? Explain.
A. On a scale from 1-10, I think I would have earned a 6 or a 7, because I had everything going swimmingly, until I forgot my lines, which ended up being a big part of my presenting.

How do I think my group members perceived me? Why do I think this?
A. I think my group members thought that I was a slacker, or an under-achiever, this was because, even though I had, it appeared as if I had just thrown the debate away and not practiced.

How do I think the 8th graders perceived me? Why do I think this?
A. From what I know, the 8th graders probably took it as an insult, that we had all graded them poorly on their projects. Then stunk it up with ours.

Knowing that I can only control how I act and react, if I could do this presentation again, what would I change about my actions to make it a more ideal experience?
A. I would make sure that I can perform in front of a crowd by finding some people to listen while I practice my lines.

What are my strengths in groups?
A. My strengths in a group would be that I can memorize certain things to help people.

What areas do I need improvement?
A. I need to be able to perform and present in front of a group of people.

What is the most important thing I learned about myself? Why is this so important?
A. I always thought that I would be able to do anything in a crowd, I would always imagine myself acting in a live show, this is important because I will need to be able to get in front of an audience for performance grades.

Are there any other things that I need to express?
A. I also need to express that I prefer to work in groups, but mainly groups that I can understand and everyone will play a different role.
